237/365: Home in the Horse Tails.

I went out night caching, with friends and a canoe last night. Along the way I was taking pictures of an Osprey and a Heron – rather impressed with what I could pull out with a flashlight and ISO 12,800 on the D800. Afterward, while the other half of the group was out paddling I wandered over to a patch of horse tails with a path down the middle. Spent several minutes light painting the horse tails before I noticed I was catching this little spider making a web when I checked one of the close up photos. This became my new muse, and I repositioned the camera for a better angle on the arachnid. Something to remember here with this cropped image – this was in total darkness, there was slight movement with the light breeze on everything, and I didn’t use flash… all the light here comes from me waving a flashlight across the scene from behind and left of the camera.

236/365: Bright Idea.

Heading home from work, waiting for the light to change in my favour. I suspect these people have a hand in that process, as they’re here changing the light bulbs on the stop light. Before you fret about the photo from the car was in Park while waiting for the (rather long) light, and it was solid red in my direction. Pretty sure I’d get a reaction from the workers if I parked the car and returned with my DSLR. This is one of those times the iPhone came in handy.

235/365: Night Travels.

Heading home from a BFL Boot Camp 7 planning meeting, and had night time on my mind … but not a lot of time on my hands. So, here’s a quick photo of the night sky from Old Church Road in Caledon. I seem to have a lot more fun when I’m using my camera in the dark for some reason.

234/365: Lunar Shed.

Oh the fun with epiphanies. One thing I need to remind myself from time to time is that I am out making art, versus taking photos. I don’t work for a newspaper, I aim to get photos that would be printed and hung on a wall. With that in mind, I was driving home last night and saw my favourite little abandoned shed by the Maple Lodge Farms building in Brampton. The moon was out and I got it into my head that I’d like to see the two objects together in my photo. Only problem was, to do that would require some amount of trespassing to get close enough that I could drop my angle of view down. Nah, this called for a more radical approach. I’ll just put the moon where I want it. I took a landscape with the shed in it, then framed the moon — zoomed in a bit — and let Photoshop’s “blend layers” do the rest of the dirty work. Now, I’m not terribly happy with the final photo, but I *am* happy with the awakening to the creative possibilities here, and really, isn’t creative juices what a 365 day project is all about?

233/365: Shingles and Bricks.

Spotted this old house hiding in a new subdivision by the north Brampton Walmart super centre. They moved the house when they built the store and now it’s surrounded by very, very nice houses. Anyway, I started with the requisite whole house photos before settling down on more subtle details. Like the textures from the bricks and shingles, particularly around the missing shingle.

232/365: Potted Alvin.

Taking a break from the hardwood floor install, and Kristen spots our resident back yard chipmunk doing something cute. He’s posing on the little clay pot on the backyard table. I grabbed the Nikon and got a quick photo unfortunately with some distractions that I couldn’t move without bothering the little fella.

231/365: Floored.

This is how I spent my weekend …. installing a hardwood floor in one of our bedrooms. The photo here is my iPhone down beside one of the new boards showing the plywood subfloor that we already installed. Even though I didn’t get outside much it was a great way to spend the weekend actually.

230/365: Windmill’s Backbone.

Out hunting for Munzees with the BFL Crew tonight. At one point we ended up near the windmill at Lisgar GO. Around the same time I was fiddling around with my Olloclip fisheye lens on the iPhone and I took this photo from the backside of the windmill, where the ladder is. Of course when we arrived was the precise moment the windmill shut itself down and the gearing made some rather discomforting noises.

229/365: Container Cats.

Long, looooong day at the office so a quick and easy photo today. Here’s our kitchen container jars with their ceramic cat decorations. Some we picked up in Markham, the others in Mexico.

228/365: Industrial Solitude.

A bench in front of an arch that overlooks a stormwater retention pond in Mississauga. This pond is right across the street from Loblaw’s building at the 407/Mississauga Road. While I was here, I also saw some ducks and a Great Blue Heron. I wasn’t happy with my heron photos, so I’m falling back to the original reason I stopped here – this little sitting spot that I imagine is popular around lunch time.
