277/365: Where’s The Beef?

Showed up for lunch today at the McDonald’s near my office. This is what met me at the door – a stark reminder of the beef recall affecting the Canadian food distribution system. Now, fortunately I was hankering for chicken but it goes to show just how fragile our lifestyle can be at times.

276/365: The Open (Server Room) Door.
Well, only been at the office for 13 hours now, which gives me very little time for exploring with the camera. Only lights on here are in my office and the server room. Hmmm, that’s kind of photogenic….

275/365: Call Before You Dig.
This is a photo of my television. But that isn’t what I asked Cogeco to display on it. No, thanks to a construction crew that dug up a major cable connection most Cogeco customers are without TV tonight. Right now I’m happy my Internet is DSL based, and that I have an AppleTV device so I can put something else on. Like a reality show that teaches shovel operators how to locate buried cables in Ontario ….

274/365: The Vault.

One bonus of staying out all night with the camera – I can take two photos of the day for my Project. My “day” is defined as midnight to midnight, and I was out until 6AM with the camera tonight, and while I go every year, this year had one difference. I carried a tripod and with my D800 I didn’t have to resort to using it even once. This is a photograph taken at one of the City Hall installations, “The Vault” which was part of the “Museum for the end of the world”. It’s a photograph placed at the bottom of a reflective tube which is then backlit. Makes for a really neat effect that I’ll likely try to replicate myself later.

273/365: Nuit Blanche – World Without Sun.

Told you I had an interesting weekend planned. I spent Saturday night through Sunday morning touring one of my favourite events in Toronto – Nuit Blanche. This photograph was actually taken much later in the night than my other photos from this spot – I was on my way to the marquee event “Museum of the End of the World” when I passed behind the “World Without Sun” installation at Nathan Phillips Square. I post this photo as my photo of the day, since it is an unusual angle – you can see the million or so photos from the other side being composed by the people looking back at the camera! I’m sure they have posted photos online as well 🙂

272/365: Fall Watercolours.

Spent the day canoeing near Dorset. After we pulled the canoe from the water, we made our way over to a waterfall nearby. Since it was past dusk, we had to provide our own light for the waterfall and the fall colours on the trees. Here’s a “light painting” photo where I opened the camera shutter for a few seconds and waved a flashlight across the trees. The waterfall had a constant but dimmer flashlight appled to it. The main chute is actually out of the picture, this is the rapids above the falls.

270/365: Night Shift.
This is the view of my workplace as I left today, only it wasn’t today anymore it was tonight. This basically meant I didn’t get much of a chance for a creative photo today but no worries…. You should see the weekend I have planned!

269/365: Going Up, Coming Down.

This is the new water tower in Georgetown … and the old one. The steel tower, that always looked like it was inspired by The Oatmeal with the big googly eye microwave transmitters on it is almost gone. Another day or two and it will be nothing but a memory. So here’s a photo of the last stages of the demolition. This was actually a handheld photo from the street so I had to tweak the distortions out a bit but that’s about it.

268/365: No Step.

This old bridge just off 5th Line in Milton should probably not be used to cross the creek below. The wood has rotted and the metal has corroded to the point that steel beams are lying on their side. No, I wouldn’t trust this bridge to hold itself up never mind me. I discovered the bridge a couple years ago when I was logging the geocache that’s … on the other side. I suggest you bring boots and walk through the creek if you want to visit that geocache.
