19/365: Must Work in I.T.

19/365: Must Work in I.T., originally uploaded by Gregory Pleau.

Some days I will spend a lot of time setting up for a specific photo shoot. Today was not one of those days. I had to pop over to Buffalo to pick up something and that sort of cut into my photography time. When I saw this I knew I had my photo for the day – because I work in I.T., and every I.T. Professional I know would hang this on the office door if they could……

18/365: F.W.R. Dickson Wilderness Area Boardwalk.

Today was a perfect day for a geocaching hike, and the spot I picked was F.W.R. Dickson Wilderness Area southwest of Cambridge. This boardwalk across a wetland area caught my eye as they’re usually straight around these parts. If you visit, bring some bird seed as the Chickadees are very very friendly along the trail.

17/365: Halton’s Most Expensive Tree.

Had a bit of luck for today’s photo. I went down to Halton’s Regional Centre on Bronte Street in Oakville for the flu shot clinic. Halton’s most expensive tree is next door and I decided to photograph this for today’s picture as I made my way here. The luck part comes from the snowstorm that blew in while I was busy getting a needle in my arm – and if there’s one thing I like is a bit of weather for a photo shoot. I call this Halton’s most expensive tree as the Region spent around $350,000 to route the highway expansion around it after public outcry to the proposal that they would remove it for an extra lane. Now the highway splits and goes around the tree.

16/365: Watch Your Shadow.

16/365: Watch Your Shadow. , originally uploaded by Gregory Pleau.

So, on my way out of the office I was distracted by my iPhone. Sometimes I have to watch my shadow as it gets a mind of it’s own. You should always watch your shadow….

This photo is a composite image. I used the self timer on my camera to take 5 photos at a time, separated by three seconds. I positioned myself with the building floodlight way off to the left and then posed for the first exposure with my iPhone looking distracted. For the next four photos I posed my shadow in different ways, leaving one blank wall photo as well. Then I just opened up the first image, the shadow I liked and the blank wall into Photoshop as layers and masked different parts to show through. Who knew a self portrait could be this much fun?

15/365: Crack of Light.

15/365: Crack of Light., originally uploaded by Gregory Pleau.

This was fun. As usual lately I went out to look for a geocache after work. Found it, and then started mapping a social trail that was missing on my GPS. At the end of the trail is a highway culvert, which I followed checking out the graffiti and other things. Then I saw the icicle. I say “the” icicle as it was by itself halfway across the highway and about 7 feet long dripping from a drain in the roof. I positioned a flashlight to illuminate just the icicle and stepped back to grab a few photos of it. My favourite is this one, where the icicle is set against the blackness of the tunnel and that’s it. The shot is handheld and it’s also full colour – it just looks like it’s black and white.

14/365: Rush Hour.

14/365: Rush Hour., originally uploaded by Gregory Pleau.

Been meaning to try this shot for a while now. The 401 is at one of it’s busiest points here at the Dixie Road interchange in Mississauga. A phenomenal amount of traffic passes this point every day in both directions. I found myself visiting a geocache nearby that provided a very handy parking spot to grab the camera and run over. I took about four photos while I was here and decided I had what I wanted for this outing. I desaturated the orange cast a bit that was on the road to emphasize the traffic streaks.

13/365: No Hockey Here.

This was a rather interesting thing to see on the drainage pond at Dominion Gardens today. The pond is surrounded by “No Skating” signs – permanent ones – yet we counted at least 7 abandoned hockey pucks on the melting ice. Who ever has been playing hockey here on the thin ice did remember to pull the net off the ice. It has been well up into the mid teens here temperature wise so that ice wouldn’t hold a drink up right now, never mind a hockey player.

12/365: What Winter?

This is not a library photo from the fall. I took this during the afternoon today as I hiked along the A.F. Coventry Nature Trail in Terra Cotta Conservation Area with my wife. It was +15C outside today which pretty much obliterated what little snow we have around these parts. Pretty much everybody I know made sure they got outside and took in this spring like weather while we have it. I’m sure I’ll be back to snowscapes before too long.
