11/365: Ruins by the Trail.

A set of ruins on the River and Ruins Side Trail of the Bruce Trail near Lowville. Tossed on the 14-24, which I now call the Nautlius Lens because of it’s shape and aimed to silhouette the ruins against the night sky. It was mostly cloudy (and rainy actually) but we had a respite from that while geocaching near here – enough that a few stars even came out.

10/365: Elias, Leave the Light On.

I dropped by here actually to do some multiple exposure experiments with shifted focus but the lens choice I had didn’t turn out as I hoped. Still, while I was here I did grab a few “non experimental” photos as I still needed one for the day. While this looks like a mid afternoon photo, it was taken about three hours after sunset. The giveaway is the lights in the windows. St. Elias church in Norval, Ontario.

9/365: Lost Garden.

Another abandoned property, soon to be redeveloped by a large company into warehouse space or office space. The sign down the road calls for “Prestige Industrial” uses. I was brought here by a geocache and with the clouds zooming by in a noticeable wind I decided to grab a wide angle shot of the building from the back.

8/365: The Lodge at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Here’s a night photo of a structure deemed “The Lodge” at Norval’s Hillcrest Cemetery. It’s an ultrawide taken at night, on my way home from work. The building faces a busy intersection that had a lot of traffic, so I had to time this between headlights and brake lights reflecting off the building. There is also a lot of aircraft heading to and from YYZ that meant more waiting.

7/365: Credit River Nightscape.

Went to visit a geocache in Streetsville tonight, and took the “good” camera along for the trip. This is the view looking downstream from Streetsville Memorial Park, with the old mills in the background, among other bits of suburbia. Hard to believe there are footprints on the river near where I was taking these photos.

6/365: Smilies in the Woods.

If ever there was a way to represent a geocacher’s view of the forest …. kindly provided in the forest. I was out walking the park surrounding Milton’s mill pond with my wife. I happened to be aware of the geocaches here too, so I was out looking for “a smiley” or two.

5/365: Self Portrait, In A Way ….

I have two major hobbies these days. The first, you are already aware of – I enjoy photography. The other hobby of mine is a game called “geocaching”. That one has people seeking hidden “caches” with a GPS unit. I’ve been geocaching for almost 10 years now, and my handle on the website is northernpenguin. So here’s a “Self portrait” with my geocaching handle, and my oldest camera – my Kodak Duaflex II. One day I need to try a photo outing with it.

4/365: Islands in the Stream.

One thing I’m always keeping an eye out for on a winter hike is snow caps in rivers and streams, formed when the snow falls on the water and is swept away but it still remains on rocks, plants and other items sticking up out of the creek. While geocaching near Shelburne, Ontario today I spotted this in the creek – a marshy spot with lots of little green plants wearing snow above the water line. This photo is taken using the live view feature of my camera, held about two inches off the water surface.

3/365: Quiet in the Cold.

This is a couple trees standing alone in the winter darkness of the Credit River Valley in Brampton. Of course, this photo doesn’t look dark because of all the city lights bouncing off the snow fall, and the fact that I have a DSLR that I can toss on a tripod then lock the shutter open for a few seconds. I was thinking black and white before I even took the camera out of the pack.

2/365: FSM.

Today was a fun day. Had to get gasoline in my car, and after the holiday travels with the cats I also wanted to give the car a good vacuuming. Easy solution – the local car wash gives a free vacuum session with a car wash purchase so win-win. No more salt, or kitty dander and, an opportunity for another out the windshield car wash photo. It was here that I met a manifestation of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. I think. It may have just been a car wash brush and lights. You decide!
