337/365: RCI Radio Canada International, Sackville.

I have been here before, so when I had the opportunity to revisit Radio Canada International (CBC) and their shortwave transmitters at Sackville, NB I made sure I brought the camera. I arrived with another geocacher friend of mine who spent time looking for the cache (I found it in 2008) while I shot photos of the facility. I had no idea the budget was yanked and this stopped transmitting in June of this year. Photo was taken in moderately heavy rain giving the foggy appearance. Strong winds meant I was hiding behind the car to keep my light duty tripod out of the wind.

336/365: Keeping an eye on the Christmas Tree.

Today was the big go all out and get the major work done at the Moncton office, so I did not venture far for my photo of the day. Here’s a bit of depth of field work with a figurine of a snowman at the office reception, and the decorated Christmas tree in our Moncton branch.

335/365: Mt. Katahdin.

Today I took a bit of a flight from Toronto to Moncton. Looking out the window as the plane passed over Quebec, then Maine it was clear winter arrives earlier in some places than others. Here is a view of a place on my bucket list for backcountry travel, this is Maine’s highest peak, at 5,270 feet Mount Katahdin clearly has enough snow on it to be an impressive sight. One day I’ll get here, or at least paddle the river with the same name that leads here.

334/365: All lit up.

This is the Ontario Khalsa Darbar in Mississauga, lit up since Diwali started. Every day I pass by on the way home from work and it seems they add more lights every day. It’s quite the sight for an industrial section of town.

333/365: Penguin Noir.

Ok, maybe I’m starting to use the whole plexiglas with light thing as a crutch for the project. I’ve started getting in the habit when I’m unable (or too lazy) to get out for a shot and well that happened today. This is an animated penguin toy that I’ve used as my avatar in a few forums. I put it on the old plexiglas rig, with books holding it up above my SB-800 (yup, a real speedlight not my headlamp). The flash is level with my penguin and aimed from the left side, on about 45 degrees. The black and white conversion thing happened in Lightroom.

332/365: Lonely Nights.

This abandoned house sits just off Winston Churchill Blvd, on the Halton/Peel boundary. I spotted it a couple months ago but decided to hold off for a better sky at night before I photographed it. The image is a RAW long exposure at night, and I’ve pulled the shadows up in post (the D800 is great for that) and pushed the highlights down to darken the sky. Then I went ahead and put a graduated filter on the sky in Lightroom to maximize it. All the lighting is from the moon and city lights.

330/365: Where there’s smoke.

Here’s a little 2AM fun at BFL Boot Camp 7. One of the attendees, who is also a photographer friend of mine, had these little survival signal smoke canisters and set them off near our command centre for fun and photos. This is a quick photo taken with my iPhone 5 of the orange smoke that it produced.

329/365: BFL Boot Camp 7.

This is a moment I wait for every year. At the pub event portion of BFL Boot Camp 7: Midnight in the Garden, moments after the release of the “launch kits”. Here, the geocachers in attendance are given the information about the geocaches placed for the event. Five minutes after this photo the pub is nearly empty. We spent the rest of the night out in the woods having the time of our lives!

328/365: First Snowsquall.

Out in the woods again tonight, testing our BFL Boot Camp 7 caches. The event is tomorrow night. One tradition we have over the years is to get some “weather” to go with the event. Right on time, Mother Nature handed us a bit of snow in the area of our caches. Here I’ve decided to get in nice and close with my LED headlamp and that 2.8 lens I’m so happy with.
