307/365: Working The Railroad.

Here’s a fun image that I took at our local train station in Georgetown. It’s well after hours, and I like the building so I wandered over to grab a quick shot. As usual, something else caught my eye once on site, namely this CN freight car parked at the station. Judging by the grass growing around it, they’ve parked it here for a while. Another thing I decided to do was use a prime lens and use my feet to zoom. Today’s lens choice? My 28mm f2.8 Nikkor … which is a film (hence FX) lens.

306/365: Shelled.

I’m back with my reflection template again – plexiglas and flashlight. This time I got clever and started blocking off the light with some books, acting as “barn doors” to shape the light. I also decided to use one of my film lenses so this one’s a little higher resolution than the leaf was. The dust bits actually fell off the shell and frankly the work involved in placing the shell always knocked off more dust so I left it. What’s interesting is that this shell isn’t from the ocean (that I know of). Sandy didn’t blow it in from the east coast either – I found it about two months ago in the Credit River in Caledon, while out hiking. I’ll wash it up and try another photo later in the project. For now, here’s a reflection on the plexiglas pretty much as I found it.

305/365: BFL’ing.

Just a bit of fun in the woods, night caching. Here I’ve posed in front of my camera with my “BFL”. My face is lit by the screen of my iPhone, which I’m using to find my way. There’s also my GPS with it’s screen on in the photo. This is a typical thing to find me doing on a Friday night, looking for geocaches in the dark.

304/365: Hit The Rails, Sandy.

Another day, another same storm. Here’s the clouds hanging out over Georgetown, as seen from the rails near Heritage Road. 30 second exposure to blur the clouds and show their motion. This is still Sandy though she’s much, much weaker now than yesterday. No warnings around here, didn’t have to hold on to the tripod nearly as much tonight.

303/365: Hello Sandy!

While we’re nowhere near as affected as places like New York City or New Jersey, we are seeing some effects from Hurricane Sandy here in the Toronto area. I took these photos tonight just as the storm was making landfall hundreds of kilometres away. The location is right by the Burlington Skyway Bridge in Hamilton, Ontario. At the time we were seeing 60kph winds and I managed to sneak out between rain bands. The waves are a good size here but shooting at night blurs them out. The weather is supposed to get more fickle through the night as Sandy comes ashore, drops to post-tropical storm, then depression as she makes her way toward us.

302/365: Perfect For A Rainy Day.

Well, today the wonderful seemingly eternal fall rainstorm continues. Not exactly the best weather to walk around with a 72mm wide lens about. Nah, I just got lazy and shot a pile-o-coffee beans at a grocery store in Oakville. Once Sandy gets here I hope to get some wave action photos to make up for it.

301/365: Yellow Maple Leaf and Raindrops.

Just a simple image of a yellow maple leaf on my Corolla’s sunroof, taken with my iPhone 4S from underneath. It’s raining here today (well, actually for the next week thanks to “Frankenstorm” Sandy). The maple leaf fell off my tree in the front yard and the rain stuck it nicely to my car (with a bunch of it’s friends I might add).

300/365: Norval’s Shoe Tree.

Wow. 300 days…. hard to believe I’ve made it this far into the project. This is Norval’s shoe tree, on Adamson Road leading out of the village. My sister in law asked for a photo of this to be on the project early on and I opted to wait for my newer camera before shooting it. Time went on, and today I noticed the tree is putting on it’s autumn show so I decided today was the day to take it’s picture. I do want to come back with speedlights and play with the lighting a bit…. perhaps later in the project for that though.

299/365: Foggy Mornings.

Told you I love when it gets all foggy out. I got up a little early today to make sure I’d have time to capture the morning fog. Here’s an image from the wetland beside Heart Lake Conservation Area in Brampton. There’s still just a trace of autumn colour left over too.

Um whoops. Posted this on the wrong blog at first. I’ll just reblog it over here.

298/365: Crossings.

I love a foggy night. Well, I love fog in general – it’s photogenic magic for us photography types. I made a beeline to a spot where I could use the fog in a photo. Enter my favourite little railway crossing at Heritage Road in Brampton. My aim was a vanishing point photo with the rails leading into the fog. I got a couple good photos of that, sure. As I was packing up I heard the distant sound of a locomotive’s warning. I set up and waited for the train to arrive. This was one of my favourite shots tonight, and it’s literally a setup test shot for framing…. the cars that drove through tossed out the test value for exposure but I’m not complaining.
