77/365 : Complaint Department.

Today’s a fun photo. I stopped by the office tonight to assist a fellow co-worker with some computer problems. One of the more interesting things about her office is this wonderful little sculpture that echoes the sentiments of help desk workers everywhere. Fortunately we’re nowhere near installing these in our IT department. Yet 🙂

76/365 : For the Birds.

Another Friday night has me wandering around the Humber College campus, waiting for Chris-Mouse before our geocaching adventures. Today it’s nice and sunny so I’m aimlessly walking around. Then I hear some chirping about a foot from my head, and these little birds are going to town on a pine tree. So I pull out the Fuji camera I’m carrying and they, as expected, head for the hills – or at least higher branches. Then I remember I’ve got the Nikon with the 300mm sitting in the car. Ok, wander over to the car and switch cameras. Now I’ve got no problems getting a good frame with a nice easily visible bird in the frame. While I’m shooting, one of the photography students wanders over to discuss my camera and what year of the photography program I’m in. Bit of shock when I mention that I haven’t been enrolled in the College since about ‘95 and that it was computers not photography I was enrolled in 🙂

75/365: Lighting Rainbow.

Drove to work this morning and had an interesting treat. This time of year, I tend to be driving into sunrise on the way to the office. We also had a couple thunderstorms coming up from the west. Now we all know how to see a rainbow – you need heavy rain with the sun to your back. So to recap, I have a sun rising to the east and a rather active thunderstorm with lightning to the west of me. That meant I got to see a rainbow shooting lightning bolts out of it. I wasn’t equipped for daytime lightning photography but I did get the rainbow at least. “Cross Processed” in Aperture.

74/365: π Day.

Well, it’s March 14. Or 3/14. Or 3.14. That’s Ï€ for math geeks. There’s a word that sounds very similar to Ï€ … “pie”. So, a couple of our geocaching friends – Leslie, Sheannah and Dan a.k.a. Elf, Rainbow and Tomtec spent the day baking pies on request, then invited everyone over for a Ï€ party. Here’s some of the results!

73/365 : Blowing in the Wind.

Took a drive in the country on the way home from work today. Here I’m on King Street in Caledon and I’ve actually stopped to take a photo of something else but at the end of the shoot, this is what I settled on. I deliberately picked settings that would slow things down enough for a slight blur to show the action of the wind on these reeds. I spotted a few things along the way here so I’ll likely be back for a few photos over the course of the project. Black and White conversion with “Green” filter in Aperture. I’ve also used my favourite “bokeh” lens here, my 70-300mm.

72/365: GO Train.

On the way home, I drove around a few places to see if something would “leap out in front of my camera” as the idea well was a bit dry today. I had a combination of a light mist and dwindling light levels that was causing me to avoid a number of photo chances. Eventually I arrived at the Heritage Road rail crossing so I decided I would take a photo of the tracks disappearing into the fog. No sooner did I park the car than the crossing arms activated signalling an approaching train. This is when I’m glad I reset my camera settings to a known “start” position after each use. I had just a few seconds to run into position and frame the approaching train. I appreciated the mist now, as it showed the beams from the train’s headlights.

71/365 : Not for Walking.

Today was a day for being outside. I took several photos in different places and really, didn’t have this photo in mind for the photo of the day. Came upon this on the way home from Orangeville and (having had a recent discussion about shoe trees with someone) decided to stop here. The light was hitting just right and it was a good spot to hide a new Munzee. This shoe tree is located on the Orangeville-Caledon Townline.

70/365 : FIRST Robot.

Today I had the fun to attend the FIRST Robotics Competition at UOIT in Oshawa. This has turned into a bit of a family tradition over the last few years – head out to the competition and cheer on Team 781 … Kincardine’s Kinetic Knights. This team has several family members on board and this isn’t the first time I’ve aimed a camera at their robot. Here you can see it in the process of shooting some basketballs into a net during today’s competition.

69/365 : Reflective Angles.

Friday night, which means it’s BFL night. One of our members originates from his day job at Humber College in north Toronto. I was picking him up but arrived at the campus before he was finished work, so I wandered around the grounds looking for a possible photo opportunity. I found it just to the left of the main entrance, here where the glass reflects the angles of the building.

68/365 : Problem, Solution.
Remember a couple days ago, that I had some frustrations with my USB hard drive that could be best summed up as Expectro Ejectus? Well, today’s photo is the end to that year long frustration. I have fired the Seagate FreeAgent as – with a MacBook – I find it as reliable as an etch-a-sketch in an earthquake. This is the replacement, a LaCie rugged hard drive that not only does USB more reliably but it also does FireWire 800 so it is quicker too! The cable shown leads to the Seagate from hell.
