67/365 : Gazebo Starburst.
Stopped on the way home to deploy a Munzee at Dominion Gardens Park. While I was here I had an eye open for photo opportunities and found what I was looking for by simply looking straight up inside the park’s large gazebo. Photo is unedited, right from the iPhone4S

66/365 : Sunset in Norval.

Heading home from the office today, saw the colour of the sun setting behind these trees at the top of the hill in Norval. Parked the car at the nearby cemetery and setup for a few quick shots. This is an exposure fusion between two photos, one dark and one lighter. Processing these photos was an exercise in frustration thanks to a Seagate Freeagent USB hard drive that really doesn’t like my Macbook. The first few “finished products” were discarded when the drive chose to eject at the moment the OS tried to write the file to it. I’m going to replace this drive with another brand.

65/365 : Nailed It.

Lost the opportunity to be overly creative about my photo for today, thanks to this new resident in my wife’s tire. Looks like I’m off to the dealership in the morning to do something about this. Grumble.

64/365 : Silhouettes in the Sky.

I was in Burlington with Kristen and as I was pondering where to direct the car on the way home to find a subject for today’s photo, Kristen suggests we go for a walk on our favourite trail down by the Lake…. namely the Hamilton Beach Trail. You would think a beach holds a lot less attraction in the depths of winter and you would be wrong. I immediately sensed both a great photo opportunity (beach!) and a romantic walk with my wife. Looking at the picture above, you may be wondering what happened. Well, we went for that walk, and enjoyed it. The picture is that serendipity that life throws your way. I pulled into a parking lot near the Burlington Skyway Bridge and put the car in park. Took a sip from my coffee and saw something interesting in that thing we refer to as the rear view mirror. It was quite the large scaffolding conglomeration as they are working on that Skyway bridge it seems. With the sun setting behind it what I saw trumped anything I later saw on the beach. I enjoy looking for patterns and lines and here was quite the dramatic display of both.

63/365 : Weakest Link.

Not what I expected to post for the day, but that’s the best part about a photo project. It’s not always what’s planned out so keep an eye open for other opportunities, lest you miss the proverbial forest for the trees. Here’s the story – the day was very, very windy. So windy I actually lost a couple shingles off my roof. I decided that with all the wind, it would be a good time to head down to the lake and get a bunch of waves splashing about, or maybe one of those ethereal looking long exposures. The point I got to the lake was at Gairloch Gardens in Oakville. This is a fabulous little park flanked by the Oakville Galleries. When I got to the water I was a bit disappointed though. 1 foot waves didn’t lead to much splashing. Still, I made do and used the zoom to pull some action out of the waves. Kristen, my wife, was wandering around looking at other things while I was doing this. At one point she mentioned someone putting locks on that chain over there, and when I saw that it became the new focal point for my camera. Bit tricky taking a closeup photo of a lock in 100kph winds but managed to get a couple workable photos.

62/365 : Geocache at Night.

Wasn’t happy with my earlier photos from the day, but had some fun during our night caching outing near Aurora. Here, I’ve pulled a geocache out of it’s hiding spot and used my iPhone to get a photo of it. The lighting is provided by a flashlight.

61/365: Maple Leaf on a Cold Morning.

Woke up this morning and found out we had freezing rain followed by snow last night. Didn’t have the time to get out and take a proper set of photos, since I had to get to work. By the time I got to the office everything had melted, so I’m glad I took a moment to point the Nikon at the tree in my front yard (which is a Maple).

60/365 : Event Horizon.

This photo comes from where I work. I work for a fire protection company and one of the things we do here is fabricate pipe for water based sprinkler systems – the ones that put out fires, not water your lawn. Anyway, I was heading back to my desk through the shop and found it was idle here. I also found that there was an unusual amount of pipe at the cutting station. I had my company issued iPhone 4S handy so I popped a few shots of the pipe – particularly where they were different lengths and continued back to my desk to close the ticket I was working on. The post processing happened in Aperture.

59/365: Portrait of a Latté.

Yesterday I posted a photo with Mocha in it, our calico cat. Well, Mocha’s Kristen’s cat. The tabby cat that follows me everywhere I go in the house is Latté. Here I’ve decided to play with my nifty 50 and a couple flashes – one on either side – controlled with Nikon’s CLS system. Everything about this photo is manual – the flash control is dialled in using commander mode – 1/32 power and max zoom on both flashes. The exposure is 1/500 at f/3.2 and I’m using manual focus as well. The focus assist lamp tends to annoy the kittens so I try to avoid using it while taking their photo.
