86/365 : Grain and Thread.

Stopped by Churchville on the way home from work on a sunny day. Started off shooting the bridge. One particular piece of advice I’ve had repeating in my mind lately is “get closer”. So, once I was sure I had my photo of the day locked in, I started relaxing and looking for neat little patterns and closeups and such. Here’s a few threads where the cables for the wooden guardrail come together. Turns out, that was more interesting to me than the bridge itself was today. Black and White conversion with Blue Filter performed in Aperture.

85/365 : Sunset on Aquitaine.

I have a weekend tradition now with my wife. We have a picnic somewhere nice, and read our e-books. This weekend, we ended up at Lake Aquitaine in the north end of Mississauga.  Here’s a view of the lake as the sun started to set.

84/365 : That Seagull is Green.

Today’s photo is a rather unexpected one. I went to see a movie with my wife (The Hunger Games) in Brampton. Before the show, we wandered around the “power centre” that the theatre is located within. Walking back from Mark’s, we were passing in front of the Stitches store and my ear was tuned to the sounds all the spring birds were making as they hung out on the sign above. One of these birds sounded familiar, but not the typical southern Ontario variety. So I looked up, and sure enough there was a green bird – a member of the parrot family and most definitely not a local variety. I figure he(?) was hanging out on the sign to take advantage of the heat from the sign’s lighting system. Most likely an escaped pet, and hopefully someone will coax him inside before the next winter arrives.

83/365 : Hercules Size Foam Party.

While I’m an I.T. guy at work, I don’t work for an I.T. services company. I work for a fire protection and life safety provider. One of our core businesses is putting out fires, and that’s what you’re looking at here. This photo is from a job site, where we are testing the fire suppression system for an aircraft hangar. We douse the fire with expanding foam in this situation. To give you an idea of scale, this building houses aircraft such as the C-117 and C-130 “Hercules” transport aircraft. This place is HUGE.

82/365 : Winter’s over.

I guess winter’s officially over when they take the snow fences down. Spotted along the side of Mayfield Road in Caledon, near Mississauga Road. There was a thunderstorm sneaking by at sunset too, which made for more interesting colour to boot.

81/365 : Early Spring.

This photo is in such an exotic place, known as my office. These crocus’ are popping up out of the garden by our front door. They’re the first flowers I’ve seen in bloom in 2012 so that makes for my photo of the day. To get rid of the not-very-pleasing background, I’ve once again pulled out the bokeh crushing 300mm and used it to blur it all away.

80/365 : Thistle on a Foggy Morning.

Today started as it typically has during the recent warm spell we’ve been having. Thick, pea soup fog. Most people were stressed out or driving too fast. I found another tactic to deal with the more complex commute … I left early and stopped a few times to take photos. I’ve always held the belief that the best days for photography are the weather events – not the clear sunny days. Here’s a thistle I found along a farmer’s fence. I should note this is a full colour photograph, not a black and white conversion.

79/365 : Eugenia Falls.

Today’s project was to visit, and hike around Hogg’s Falls in Grey County. I didn’t actually make it to that waterfall. Nope, instead I parked at Eugenia Falls Conservation Area and got it into my head to see if I could get a photo from the bottom of the waterfall instead of the usual viewpoint from the top. Turns out, you can get there. It just takes a bit lot of work. All you gotta do is follow the Bruce Trail downstream and when it goes left you sorta go right. There’s a trail that follows along the cliff edge at the bottom but it’s still gonna take effort if you, like me, haul down a digital SLR, some lenses and a good heavy duty tripod. Anyway, I made it and by the time I was done shooting my photos I had no particular urge to visit Hogg’s Falls anymore. Nope, at this point I was thinking of two words: Iced Coffee.

78/365 : Connecting.

Went for a trip to Hamilton today to look at Webster’s Falls. Got great photos there, but waterfalls are a little “easy” to find around here. On the way back home I noticed they are getting close to finishing the new Bruce – Milton transmission line twinning. Here’s a photo of one of the pylons (seen from 5 side road), without the top put on it yet. The top is sitting there in the foreground. So this is the Milton end, the other end is Bruce Nuclear, a ways off to the northwest.
